Job Title: Electrical Engineer – [Substation Protection & Automation (Testing & Commissioning]

Location: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Salary: $90,000 – $120,000 + Superannuation commensurate with skill and work experience level.

Work type– Full-time [Minimum 38 Hours Per Week]

Australian Power Solutions Engineering (APS Engineering) is in need of an Electrical Engineer to start immediately.  

You will be responsible for providing engineering, testing, and commissioning support and solutions to a range of industries such as Power Utility, Oil & Gas, Mining, Process, Transport, Marine, and Process plants for Protection, Control, Communications, and Instrumentation Applications. You will be an important contribution to our goal of achieving the highest possible customer satisfaction, focusing on the continuity of customers’ processes. That means you’ll require an enthusiastic, proactive attitude and a flexible approach to work, combined with the ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures, and a willingness to learn and expand your abilities every day.

The main roles and responsibilities of the Electrical Engineer include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Development of Protection settings (Calculations, Settings, and Configurations) for generation, transmission, and distribution systems (415 Volts to 1200kV)
  • Preparation of Protection Settings Reports
  • Preparation of Commissioning ITPs and operating procedures.
  • Supporting Secondary Designers with the development of Protection circuitry design for generation, transmission, and distribution substations
  • Supporting the completion of Post Implementation Reviews and analysis of relevant projects
  • Develop designs and assessments of protection equipment selection CBs, CTs, VTs, and review of protection & control schematic diagrams.
  • Develop and review Protection study reports, test reports, and disturbance records
  • Prepare protection calculations, advice, reports, and relay setting files for typical utility and renewable protection schemes, including HV transformers, line distance and differential, bus differential, high impedance bus and overcurrent
  • Providing specialised control systems design, configuration, and support services for a broad range of assets, including SCADA, DCS and PLC systems.
  • The development and roll out of a maintenance program assuring high reliability of the plant’s Protection, Control Systems, and Instrumentation assets.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations into electrical equipment and Control Systems breakdowns.
  • PCM600, Ener Vista, DIGSI, Easergy Engineering and configuration
  • Development Micro SCADA, COM600, SSC600 Programming and Commissioning
  • IEC 61850 Substation Automation Systems design and commissioning
  • Experience in ABB Protection relays, PLC & SCADA programming.
  • Experience in the delivery of projects in the segments mentioned above.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist project teams and operations with the development of protection and control system specifications and commissioning procedures.
  • Design of process control systems, networks, I/O, instrumentation, and communication.
  • Development and delivery of control system software and testing.
  • Scopes of work, functional specifications, and test documentation.
  • Supporting the engineering team and Project Managers.
  • Tech Support, remote support for electrical plant start-up and commissioning services and Support for onsite trades and contractors.
  • Facilitating capital and operational projects works from feasibility to commissioning with responsibilities spanning across planning, design, execution, and maintenance planning.
  • Substation Primary Plant testing and commissioning – CT, VT, CB and Isolators, Earth Switches, Power Transformers
  • Evaluating Control Systems and Instrumentation equipment and processes to identify optimisation opportunities.

Skill & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical & Electronics Engineering,
  • Minimum 2-10 years of relevant industry experience
  • Hands-on experience in commissioning and troubleshooting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships with production staff
  • Excellent attention to detail and engineering accuracy
  • Adaptability to site-based and remote work environments
  • Continuous learning mindset with focus on new technologies
  • Strong documentation and reporting capability aligned with industry standards
