Position Overview

The Tour Guide / Deckhand plays a vital role in delivering exceptional visitor experiences while supporting the safe and efficient operation of our vessels.

This is a diverse and hands-on position suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, interacting with guests from around the world, and being part of a small team in a unique remote tourism environment. The successful candidate will deliver engaging tour commentary, assist with vessel operations, ensure guest safety, and contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the business.

Physical Requirements

The role requires the ability to:

  • Work outdoors in remote conditions. 
  • Stand for extended periods. 
  • Lift and carry equipment and supplies. 
  • Board and disembark vessels safely. 
  • Work on and around boats in varying sea conditions. 
  • Participate in manual handling and vessel maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities

Tour Guiding & Guest Experience : 

  • Welcome and assist guests throughout their tour experience. 
  • Deliver engaging and informative commentary on: 
    • Dirk Hartog Island’s history and heritage. 
    • Local wildlife and marine life. 
    • Conservation and environmental programs. 
    • Indigenous and European settlement history. 
  • Lead guided activities and interpretive experiences. 
  • Answer guest questions and provide destination information. 
  • Ensure all guests receive outstanding customer service. 
  • Assist with guest logistics and activity coordination. 

Deckhand Duties

  • Assist the Skipper with vessel operations. 
  • Conduct passenger embarkation and disembarkation. 
  • Handle mooring lines and assist with docking procedures. 
  • Perform vessel cleaning and presentation duties. 
  • Assist with vessel maintenance and equipment upkeep. 
  • Conduct pre-departure and post-trip inspections. 
  • Ensure safety equipment is operational and accessible. 
  • Assist with loading and unloading supplies and equipment. 

Safety & Compliance

  • Deliver passenger safety briefings. 
  • Monitor passenger safety throughout tours. 
  • Assist in emergency response situations as directed by the Skipper. 
  • Follow company safety procedures and maritime regulations. 
  • Maintain compliance with workplace health and safety requirements. 
  • Report hazards, incidents, and maintenance issues promptly. 

Skill & Experience

Essential Selection Criteria

Qualifications & Licences

  • Current First Aid Certificate. 
  • Current Driver’s Licence. 
  • Ability to obtain or hold a Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate (desirable). 
  • Current Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate (desirable). 

Experience

  • Experience in tourism, hospitality, customer service, outdoor recreation, or marine operations. 
  • Experience working with diverse customer groups. 
  • Experience working in remote or regional environments (desirable). 

Skills & Attributes

  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills. 
  • Strong customer service focus. 
  • Confident public speaker with the ability to engage groups. 
  • Positive, energetic, and professional attitude. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability. 
  • Physically fit and capable of working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Ability to speak one or more additional languages, particularly German, Italian or French. 
  • Experience working with international visitors and diverse cultural groups. 
  • Previous experience in tourism interpretation or guided tours.
