Job Description

The Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance of the software systems that underpin Geoimage’s geospatial and Earth Observation (EO) services, its client-facing digital platforms, and its internal business operations. The role translates complex spatial data and commercial requirements into reliable, scalable and maintainable software.

The role spans four connected domains: geospatial data processing and automation; customer-facing web and portal platforms, including the automation of imagery ordering and fulfilment; internal business systems and tooling; and supporting IT infrastructure. The Software Engineer frequently operates as the sole engineer on a given system, carrying it from concept through to production and ongoing support.

The role applies critical thinking to solve technical problems, works effectively with limited supervision, and contributes to high-quality outcomes across data processing, analysis, product delivery and revenue-generating client services. It requires a strong commitment to software quality, security and attention to detail, and a willingness to continuously learn and adopt new tools and approaches, including the effective use of AI-assisted development tools.

Key Responsibilities

Spatial Data & Technical Capability
Work with raster and vector data, coordinate reference systems, projections and geospatial analysis workflows. Support ingestion, processing, validation and output of large, complex spatial datasets. Build and maintain production geospatial pipelines: format conversion and optimisation, elevation and terrain products, reprojection and derived product generation. Optimise processing performance and storage for large datasets. Collaborate with geospatial specialists to ensure correctness and fitness for purpose.

Imagery Commerce Platform
Design and maintain the client-facing portal for imagery ordering, purchasing and fulfilment. Integrate third-party imagery supplier APIs. Build the geospatial UX so non-specialist clients can self-serve: AOI drawing and validation, area calculation, footprint and preview rendering, and filtering by date, sensor and cloud cover. Implement area-based pricing and supplier cost/margin logic.

Internal Geospatial Tooling
Build tools that let non-developer staff perform technical tasks independently — command-line utilities, configuration-driven pipelines, desktop GIS extensions and internal web apps — as maintainable, version-controlled products. Train c

Quality & Collaboration
Maintain test coverage over data-delivery paths; diagnose and resolve defects, performance issues and data inconsistencies. Work with geospatial specialists, sales and operations, and communicate technical trade-offs to non-technical audiences.

Skill & Experience

Essential

  • Strong software engineering skills with experience developing and maintaining production-quality software.
  • Full-stack web development capability, including server-side and front-end development within a content management or application framework.
  • Experience integrating third-party APIs and building reliable interfaces between systems.
  • Proficiency in Python and JavaScript, with sound version control practice.
  • Sound understanding of spatial data concepts and geospatial workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and structured problem-solving.
  • Strong commitment to testing, quality assurance and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision, manage competing priorities and take ownership of systems end to end.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience working with geospatial, remote sensing or Earth Observation data.
  • Familiarity with satellite imagery, analytics pipelines or derived geospatial products.
  • Experience building transactional or e-commerce systems, including payment integration and order management.
  • Experience with CRM and business automation platforms.
  • Exposure to infrastructure, networking or systems administration.
  • Interest or experience in machine learning and computer vision applied to imagery.
  • Experience working in small to mid-sized technical organisations.

  • A tertiary qualification in computer science, software engineering, information technology or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Relevant industry certification is desirable but not essential.
