Job Description

The Function Chef leads kitchen operations relating to private functions and events across Peter Rabbit Café and McGregors while also providing leadership and operational support during regular café services. The role is responsible for coordinating function food service, supervising the function kitchen team, supporting ordering and stock control, liaising closely with the Head Chef and Functions & Events Manager, and ensuring the successful delivery of both function and café services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Head Chef and Functions & Events Manager in planning and coordinating function and event kitchen operations across Peter Rabbit Café and McGregors.

  • Lead kitchen operations for private functions and events, including preparation, production and service.

  • Coordinate and supervise chefs, apprentices and kitchen assistants across function, event and café operations.

  • Allocate tasks, manage preparation lists and ensure service timelines and operational requirements are achieved.

  • Take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the function kitchen, maintaining high standards of food quality, presentation, consistency and portion control.

  • Coordinate workflow between kitchen, front-of-house and event teams to ensure successful event delivery.

  • Assist with ordering, stock control and inventory management, maintaining appropriate stock levels while monitoring food costs and minimising wastage.

  • Contribute to menu planning, recipe implementation and seasonal and function-specific menu development.

  • Train and mentor kitchen team members and provide strong leadership during preparation and service.

  • Support the development and implementation of kitchen systems and procedures.

  • Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety requirements.

  • Maintain high standards of kitchen cleanliness and organisation.

  • Support café kitchen operations as required.

  • Uphold Peter Rabbit’s policies, procedures, standards and core values.

Skill & Experience

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certificate III or IV in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent).
  • Previous experience in high-volume commercial kitchen.
  • Previous experience leading kitchen operations during functions & events.
  • Experience with stock control, ordering and inventory management.
  • Experience coordinating multiple food service periods, functions or events.

 

Skills:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Strong understanding of kitchen operations, food preparation and food safety requirements.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate multiple events and competing priorities.
  • Ability to supervise, train and mentor kitchen team members.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team during busy service periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and presentation.
  • Ability to maintain high standards under pressure
