About the Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated Laboratory Technician based in South Australia to provide high-quality laboratory services for the detection and investigation of a wide range of pathogens in samples received from across Australia, New Zealand and overseas.

You will work as part of a dedicated and collaborative team of veterinarians, scientists and technicians, supporting laboratory animal health monitoring and disease investigation activities.

Key Responsibilities

The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for a range of laboratory and specimen reception activities, including:

  • Labelling, preparing and distributing samples and associated documentation for laboratory testing.
  • Assisting with animal bookings, liaising with veterinarians, and supporting post-mortem examinations and sample collection.
  • Performing and recording bacteriology, parasitology, serology and molecular testing, and assisting with histology activities.
  • Receiving specimens, verifying submission details, identifying discrepancies, and entering submissions into LIMS.
  • Supporting sample archiving and assisting with the coordination of testing activities and laboratory caseloads.
  • Maintaining laboratory stocks, preparing reagents and consumables, and performing routine equipment maintenance.
  • Assisting with waste disposal, glassware washing, autoclaving, and maintaining clean and organised laboratory work areas.
  • Contributing to quality management, research and service improvement initiatives while maintaining safe laboratory practices and compliance with safety procedures.

Skill & Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Diploma in Animal Technology, Bachelor’s degree in Science, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Experience in techniques such as ELISA, IFA, serum preparation from blood samples or dried blood spots, wet preparation, faecal flotation, microscopic examination, automated nucleic acid extraction, gel electrophoresis, PCR, RT-PCR and interpretation of results is desirable.
  • Practical and relevant experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory would be advantageous.
  • An outstanding work ethic, positive ‘can-do’ attitude and commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
  • The ability to adapt to change and work effectively within a dynamic team.
  • The ability to follow established procedures and instructions accurately.
  • Sound organisational skills, including the ability to multitask and prioritise work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and unsupervised with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
  • A current Australian driver licence would be preferable

Employment Type

Part-time, Tuesday to Friday, with the potential to increase to full-time hours depending on training progress, performance and business requirements.
