Field Service Technician

130,000 – $140,000 (inclusive of guaranteed allowances) + super

The role

As part of a national team of field service technicians servicing and commissioning a range of specialised flexible packaging machinery installed around the country and abroad, you will travel extensively (approx. 75% of the role) throughout metro and regional VIC, as well as interstate and the occasional international trip.

Providing expert advice and service for robotic and conventional palletisers, bagging machines, wrapping and hooding machines and their corresponding control systems, you should expect to spend most of your time working on customer sites, with the remaining time spent working between the West Heidelberg office and home.

Fundamental Duties and responsibilities

Perform in-house and on-site equipment installations and start-ups

  • Install equipment at customers’ locations according to safety standards and established corporate procedures
  • Perform initial start-ups for installed equipment
  • Test and verify installed equipment at customers’ locations
  • Perform tests and verify the proper functioning of equipment
  • Train customers on the proper operation of the equipment
  • Prepare reports on completed installations
  • Do in-house equipment start-ups before it leaves for customers’ locations

Solve various equipment problems for customers

  • Visit customers in order to diagnose equipment problems
  • Find solutions in collaboration with the engineering team
  • Adjust and repair customers’ equipment and ensure it is operated safely and according to the original specifications
  • Prepare reports following service calls
  • Contribute to product development

Do preventive equipment maintenance at various customers’ locations

  • Evaluate the safety, general state and compliance of various equipment
  • Do preventive maintenance and repair on equipment
  • Ensure proper equipment functioning following maintenance visits
  • Plan following maintenance visits as needed
  • Provide on-site and/or remote technical support to clients
  • Prepare reports on the work performed

Provide over the phone technical support for customers

  • Diagnose problems and identify possible solutions for customers
  • Help customers find safe solutions to problems
  • Promote preventive maintenance and training services to customers

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing drawings, plans and designs for mechanical engineering work under the direction of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists
  • Assisting Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists in the design of mechanical equipment and plant
  • Selecting tools and equipment
  • Assembling and installing new and modified mechanical assemblies, components, machine tools and controls, and hydraulic power systems
  • Estimating material costs and quantities, and machine requirements
  • Performing and directing field and laboratory tests
  • Collecting and analysing data, carrying out complex computations and preparing diagrams
  • Organising and supervising inspection and maintenance of machines and plant
  • Ensuring that designs and finished work are within specifications, regulations and contract provisions
  • Prepares detailed drawings and plans of mechanical engineering work in support of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists.

Advanced Duties and responsibilities              

    • Assume responsibility for a certain type of service or equipment for customers
    • Do relatively complex installations at customers’ locations
    • Solve complex equipment problems for customers
    • Provide over the phone technical support for customers
    • Master preventive maintenance of equipment and suggest improvements to customers during service calls
    • Meet the demand for technical information from potential customers and promote Premier Tech products to customers

    • Be the go-to person for the team as work is carried out

    • Collaborate in the equipment design process with the engineering team
    • Help develop and implement work procedures and methods
    • Organize installations or repair work to be done
    • Develop and provide specific technical service expertise to the team
    • Apply different analysis and problem solving skills to diagnose and repair a variety of equipment
    • Resolve unusual, major and complex problems on customers’ equipment
    • Do major and non-standard equipment installations at customers’ sites

Qualifications

At least a trade qualification, associate diploma in engineering or suitable equivalent mechanical/electrical/electronic/control automation qualification.

Technical competencies

  • In-depth specific knowledge of Premier Tech packaging machinery including Bottom-Up Filling Technology is highly desirable.
  • Interpreting mechanical and general assembly drawings
  • Interpreting hydraulic circuit drawings
  • Interpreting pneumatic circuit drawings
  • Interpreting electrical schematics
  • Interpreting general installation and industrial buildings layouts
  • Industrial PLC, networks and communication protocols
  • installation, commissioning and maintenance of industrial robots, packaging and powder conveying systems.
  • Installation and optimisation of pneumatically operated equipment
  • Installation, commissioning and troubleshooting of field devices and instrumentation
  • Installation and commissioning of industrial machinery safety systems and guarding.
  • Safe troubleshooting of partially energised systems
  • Troubleshooting PLCs programs, mechanical and electrical installations.
