The Army Reserve is seeking qualified tradies for a range of Trade roles that let you step out of the regular workshop or construction site and into real adventure. 

Reserve service is designed to complement your civilian career, not replace it. A role designed for flexibility. Reservists complete a minimum of 20 days service each year (through full day or part day/evening accrual), with opportunities to serve up to 100 days.

Better still, your Reserve pay is tax-free, so every dollar you earn goes straight into your pocket.

And – If you’re a sole trader, the benefits can be even greater. Eligible self-employed Reservists may also be able to access Employer Support Payments in addition to Reserve pay – meaning you effectively get paid twice!

Key Responsibilities

The Army Reserve is currently seeking expressions of interest from qualified persons in the following trades: 

Carpenter — Construct, maintain and fix Army facilities while supporting local communities. 

Electrical Technician — Ensure the Army’s electrical, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems run at their best. 

Electrician — Keep the Army’s buildings and battle management systems powered. 

Metalsmith — Maintain Army vehicles and equipment so they’re always mission ready. 

Plumber – Play a hands-on role in delivering essential services such as water, sewage and gas services for the ADF.

Vehicle Mechanic – Bring your mechanical qualifications to a part-time role with the Army Reserve where you’ll maintain high-tech military vehicles, including 4WDs, armoured vehicles and tanks.

Fitter Armament/Weapon Technician -Take on a rewarding role that draws on your capabilities as a qualified fitter, helping to keep Army hardware, vehicles and weapons in peak working condition

Electronic Systems Technician – Work on the state-of-the-art electronics in military vehicles, weapons systems, surveillance devices, and communication and medical equipment in this rewarding, part-time role.

Skill & Experience

For the specific roles, you must: 

Carpenter: Be a qualified Carpenter. The minimum standard for entry is a Certificate III in Carpentry and demonstrated current work experience.  Carpenter – ADF Careers

Electrical Technician: Be a qualified Electrical Technician having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised institution. Electrical Technician – ADF Careers

Electrician: Be a qualified Electrician, having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised Australian institution. Electrician – ADF Careers

Metalsmith: Be a qualified Welder 1st Class, Boilermaker Maker, Boilermaker Welder or Sheet Metal Worker having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised institution. Metalsmith – ADF Careers

Plumber: Be a qualified Plumber, holding a Cert IV in plumbing, having completed an approved apprenticeship or approved traineeship at a recognised institution. Plumber – ADF Careers

Vehicle Mechanic: You’ll need to be a qualified Mechanic having completed a Certificate III in one of the following qualifications Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology or  Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or Mobile Plant Technology. Vehicle Mechanic – ADF Careers

Fitter Armament/Weapon Technician: You’ll need to be a qualified Fitter having completed a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical (e.g. a trade qualification as a Fitter and Turner, Fitter Machinist or Maintenance Fitter). Fitter Armament – ADF Careers

Electronic Systems Technician: You’ll need to have completed a Certificate III in Engineering – Electronics (i.e. be a qualified Electronics Technician, Communications Technician or Optical Technician. Electronic Systems Technician – ADF Careers
