Job Description

Established Trawling commercial fishing company working within Australian Fishing Zones and based from the home port of East Devonport TAS 7310, seek suitably qualified and experienced employees in the following fulltime fishing and seafood industry positions:

  • Ships Master
  • Ships Engineer (Fishing Industry)
  • Master Fisher
  • Ships Officer
  • Deck Hands & Fishing Hands
  • Seafood Processor Workers.

This company maintains a drug & alcohol-free workplace; employees can be subject to random drug & alcohol testing. This is a condition of employment.  All crew positions will be based from the above-mentioned home port, but you may be required to work in other locations subject to operational requirements.

For successful fishing crew candidates, a salary or percentage of catch rate as per industry standards will be negotiated according to qualifications, skills, experience and performance in the same or similar occupation.  In all cases, remuneration will be commensurate with skills and experience.

Annual salary for full-time employees for the relevant occupation will fall in the range of:

  • Ship’s Master $120,000.00 or greater, subject to negotiation
  • Ships Engineer (Fishing Industry) $75,000 to $85,000
  • Master Fisher $75,000 to $88,000
  • Ship’s Officer $74,000 to $84,000
  • Deck Hands and Fishing Hands. An annual salary for full time employees for the relevant occupation will fall in the range of $71,500 to in excess of $82,500
  • Seafood Process Workers. An annual salary for full time employees for the relevant occupation will fall in the range of $71,500 to $82,500

The above annual salary rates for all occupations listed above are plus the government regulated superannuation guarantee.

Key Responsibilities

Ship’s Master will be required to manage, control and navigate the fishing vessel and fishing operations.

Master Fisher will be required to manage and control the fishing operations and fishing vessel in consultation with the Ship’s Master and / or shore management. 

Ship’s Engineer (Fishing Industry) will be required to control and manage the operation and maintenance of the fishing vessel’s plant, equipment and gear. 

Ship’s Officer will be required to supervise and co-ordinate the activities of Deck Hands and Fishing Hands as well as assist with safe operation of the fishing vessel in consultation with the Ship’s Master and shore management. 

If relevant AMSA certifications are held, a Master Fisher and Ship’s Officer may be required to act as Relief Ship’s Master from time to time to meet operational needs.

Deck Hands and Fishing Hands will be required to perform maintenance and lookout tasks aboard the fishing vessel and all duties associated with the commercial fishing operations including but not limited to preparing fishing gear, handling ropes and wires, casting and setting fishing equipment, hauling in fishing gear and catch. 

Seafood Processor Workers will be required to sort, dress and fillet fish and sort, clean and retrieve meat from shellfish and crustaceans with a proven ability to maintain a high recovery rate; inspect, grade, package, store product, and comply with all workplace safety and health regulations.

Skill & Experience

Ship’s Master, Master Fisher, Ship’s Engineer (Fishing Industry) and Ship’s Officer

Candidates for the positions of Ship’s Master, Master Fisher, Ship’s Engineer (Fishing Industry) and Ship’s Officer must have at least 3 years’ relevant experience; with 5 years’ experience being fabvourably considered.  Where you are required to hold a license or registration, you MUST hold the appropriate tickets or you will not be considered.

Deck Hands and Fishing Hands

Candidates for the positions of Deck Hand and Fishing Hand must have at least 1 year’ Australian relevant work experience in this industry sector; with 2 years’ or more experience being favourably considered.  

All candidates need to be strong as these positions involve working on a deck, often in heavy seas and sometimes in cramped spaces. Ranked positions may include managing fishing operations aboard your vessel in consultation with the company owners.

You will be away from home for several days or occasionally weeks. Normally there is usually a short turnaround before returning to sea.

Seafood Processor Workers

Candidates for the positions of Seafood Process Worker should ideally have a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience however will consider candidates with less experience if skill level is of an acceptable standard.  You will be requested to demonstrate skill level if selected for interview.   We have both full-time and seasonal vacancies and are seeking highly experienced seafood process workers to work within our seafood processing facility.
