About the Role

On behalf of our client—a specialist in industrial maintenance, shutdowns, and mechanical upgrades across mining and heavy industry—we are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineering Technician. This role focuses on hands-on technical support, from drafting to field testing, ensuring reliability in high-pressure environments.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Documentation

  • Prepare detailed mechanical drawings, plans, and designs under the direction of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists, with a focus on industrial plant and equipment modifications.
  • Assist in designing mechanical equipment and hydraulic power systems for site-specific upgrades and shutdown projects.

Assembly & Installation

  • Assemble, install, and modify mechanical assemblies, components, machine tools, and hydraulic power systems, ensuring compliance with operational safety and performance standards.
  • Select appropriate tools and equipment for each task, considering environmental conditions and project timelines.

Analysis & Testing

  • Perform and direct field and laboratory tests on machinery and plant systems to validate performance under load.
  • Collect and analyze data from tests, carry out complex computations, and prepare diagrams to support engineering decisions.

Materials & Cost Estimation

  • Estimate material costs, quantities, and machine requirements for maintenance scopes and capital works, aligning with project budgets.
  • Prepare technical reports that support procurement and resource planning.

Inspection & Compliance

  • Organize and supervise inspection and maintenance schedules for machines and plant, prioritizing uptime and reliability.
  • Ensure all designs and finished work meet specifications, regulations, and contract provisions, including site safety standards.

Skill & Experience

  • Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a mechanical technician role within industrial maintenance, mining, or heavy engineering environments
  • Proficiency in reading and preparing mechanical drawings and CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, machine tools, and mechanical assemblies
  • Experience in field testing, data collection, and analysis of mechanical systems
  • Ability to estimate material quantities and costs accurately
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations and compliance standards
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with engineers and site teams
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to work on-site as required
