Job Description

Position Purpose:

The Telecommunication Line Technician will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of external telecommunications network cabling and related infrastructure across aerial, underground, and fibre networks. The role involves ensuring that all network construction and maintenance activities comply with NBN standards, technical specifications, and safety regulations.

• Install, maintain, repair, and upgrade telecommunications infrastructure, including aerial and underground cabling, conduits, fibre networks, equipment, and NBN assets.
• Interpret drawings, specifications, network designs, and schematics to determine installation requirements and cable routes.
• Install, configure, test, maintain, and troubleshoot telecommunications equipment, CPE, network devices, and fibre optic hardware.
• Diagnose and rectify network faults using specialised testing equipment, including OTDRs and electrical measuring instruments.
• Perform cable splicing, jointing, termination, testing, and commissioning of copper and fibre optic networks in compliance with industry standards.
• Join and terminate cables, connect telecommunications equipment, and apply protective sheathing and insulation to ensure environmental protection.
• Repair, replace, and test faulty telecommunications equipment and network components.
• Install, inspect, test, and maintain aerial and underground cabling, radio antennae, and wireless infrastructure.
• Deliver fibre optic and backhaul connectivity works for 4G and 5G telecommunications networks.
• Install and maintain structured cabling systems for voice, data, broadband, and telecommunications services.
• Conduct network testing, commissioning, service activation, and performance verification.

Skill & Experience

• Liaise with engineers, supervisors, carriers, network providers, and clients to resolve technical issues and meet project objectives.
• Supervise and train technicians and subcontractors in safe work practices, fibre splicing, fault finding, and telecommunications installations.
• Prepare reports, test records, commissioning documents, and maintenance logs for compliance and quality assurance.
• Manage site resources, materials, equipment, and subcontractors to support efficient project delivery.
• Provide technical advice on network performance, fault resolution, equipment upgrades, and service improvements.
• Ensure all work complies with NBN requirements, carrier specifications, Australian standards, and WHS regulations.

Key Skills and Requirements

• Proven experience in telecommunications infrastructure projects, including NBN or similar network deployments.
• Skilled in fibre optic installation, jointing, testing, and fault rectification.
• Strong knowledge of telecommunications standards, safe work practices, and environmental procedures.
• Trade qualification or equivalent telecommunications experience.
• Diploma qualification preferred.
Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience in telecommunications infrastructure, including fibre installation, splicing, and civil works.
