Grand Guru offers an authentic North Indian dining experience, serving a wide variety of traditional Indian dishes prepared using fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, and time-honoured recipes. The restaurant features an extensive menu including tandoori entries, chicken, lamb, beef, seafood and vegetarian curries, biryanis, freshly baked naan breads, rice dishes, desserts, and refreshing beverages, catering to a diverse range of customer preferences.

POSITION SUMMARY

Grand Guru is seeking a skilled and motivated Cook to join our busy kitchen team on a full-time basis (38 hours per week).

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and cooking quality meals, assisting with kitchen operations, maintaining food safety standards, and supporting the Head Chef in daily kitchen activities. The role requires experience in preparing Indian cuisine and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced hospitality environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and cook a wide variety of authentic North Indian dishes in accordance with established recipes, quality standards and presentation requirements.
  • Prepare and cook tandoori dishes, curries, biryanis, naan breads, rice dishes, vegetarian specialties, seafood, lamb, beef and chicken dishes.
  • Prepare ingredients by washing, peeling, chopping, marinating, grinding spices, portioning and seasoning food using traditional Indian herbs, spices and cooking techniques.
  • Set up and organise kitchen workstations with the required ingredients, equipment and utensils prior to service.
  • Operate and regulate the temperatures of tandoor ovens, grills, cooktops, fryers and other kitchen equipment to ensure food is cooked correctly and consistently.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Examine raw ingredients and foodstuffs to ensure quality, freshness and compliance with food safety standards.
  • Portion, plate and garnish meals in accordance with the restaurant’s presentation standards and ensure timely service.
  • Monitor food quality throughout preparation and cooking to maintain consistency and customer satisfaction.
  • Store food appropriately, rotate stock in accordance with food safety requirements, and monitor stock levels of ingredients and kitchen supplies, reporting shortages to management.
  • Assist the Head Chef with daily food preparation, menu items, specials and estimating ingredient requirements to minimise waste.
  • Prepare meals to accommodate customers’ dietary requirements and reasonable special requests.
  • Maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen by cleaning work areas, equipment and utensils, and complying with all food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Assist in training and supporting junior kitchen staff and apprentices and work collaboratively with the Head Chef and kitchen team to ensure efficient kitchen operations.

Skill & Experience

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Relevant qualification in Commercial Cookery or related field;
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a similar Cook position within a busy restaurant or cafe environment;
  • Experience and knowledge in preparing and cooking North Indian dishes;
  • Ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment safely and effectively;
  • Strong understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety standards;
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment;
  • Good communication and teamwork skills;
  • Strong organisational and time management abilities.
